CompactPCI Enclosure And Backplane Offers Design Control

May 1, 1999

Targeted at the telecom and industrial markets, the CompactPCI Galaxy16 is a 16-slot, modular enclosure that supports fourteen 6U expansion slots; a continuous H.110 telephony bus across all expansion slots; and up to three hot-swappable redundant power supplies. With the configurable drive enclosure, it holds up to 8 drives in either RAID or JBOD formats. The system has three main parts: a card cage which houses CompactPCI slots; the power-supply subsystem; and an optional drive enclosure. Each section has its own fan tray that circulates filtered, forced air throughout the area. The steel enclosure provides front access to the CompactPCI CPU board and optional rear transition modules, while the high density connectors in the mid-mounted backplane provide three mating levels to support live insertion. The backplane is hot-swap compatible and provides the interface for a high availability hot swap controller.
