USB 2.0 Hub Controller Enables Bus-Powered Designs

Cypress Semiconductor's EZ-USB HX2LP high-speed USB 2.0 hub controllers is optimized for cost-sensitive applications such as standalone hubs, monitors, docking stations, keyboards, and motherboards.

The latest member of the Cypress Semiconductor EZ-USB LP family of high-speed USB 2.0 hub controllers is the EZ-USB HX2LP (see the figure), which is optimized for cost-sensitive applications such as standalone hubs, monitors, docking stations, keyboards, and motherboards. The HX2LP is USB-IF and WHQL-compliant (Windows Hardware-quality lab) and is available in four-port (CY7C65630-56LFXC) and two-port (CY7C65620-56LFXC) versions. The device integrates many passive components, such as pull-up and pull-down resistors, along with gang port power control to reduce the overall bill of materials needed for a hub design. It supports bus-powered and self-powered modes and comes in a small-form-factor 56-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package that's backward compatible with Cypress' TetraHub controller.

The EZ-USB LP family employs an advanced process technology developed by Cypress to slash dynamic and standby power consumption by nearly 50%. As a result of the low dynamic power, peripherals using the new devices can operate from the power available from the USB bus. The low standby current allows portable USB applications with extended battery life. The company also offers the CY4605 reference design for the CY7C65620-56LFXC and the CY4606 reference design for the CY7C65630-56LFXC. The EZ-USB HX2LP is in full production and priced under $2.00 in high volume.
