The compact, 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) arena gets a bit more crowded with Motorola's Nitron 68HC908Q series. Based on the popular 68HC08 architecture, models come in 8- and 16-pin packages. The chips incorporate fast programming and block protection of flash memory. Security features help protect proprietary applications.

These low-cost chips have an impressive development suite, including Metrowerks' CodeWarrior Development Studio Special Edition for the 68H-C908QT/QY series. A configuration utility generates C code for peripherals. The 68HC908 also is compatible with other Motorola parts, easing migration in either direction. A full simulator enables development without target hardware.

The 68HC908Q series costs $0.70 in large quantities. The development suite, available on Motorola's Web site at no charge for registered Web site users, includes a full-feature C compiler. An evaluation board is available for $25.
