Dual-Channel UARTs Handle Either I²C Or SPI

May 3, 2007
Exar Corp.’s XR20M1172 is a 1.8-V unit, and the XR20V2172 includes integrated RS-232 transceivers.

The dual-channel XR20xx172 series UARTs from Exar Corp. target consumer and battery-powered applications such as laptops, portable devices, desktop PCs, and industrial peripheral interfaces. The XR20M1172 is a low-voltage (1.8-V) I2C/SPI UART, and the XR20V2172 is an I2C/SPI UART integrated with RS-232 transceivers. Both have 64-byte transmit-and-receive FIFO buffers. Standard features include 16 selectable transmit-and-receive FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware (RTS/CTS) and software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, and a complete modem interface. Onboard registers provide the user with operational status and data error flags. Enhanced features include a programmable fractional baud rate generator, and 8X and 4X sampling rates.

The XR20M1172 has a maximum baud rate of 16 Mbits/s at 3.3 V, while the XR20V2172 has a maximum baud rate of 1 Mbit/s at 3.3 V. An internal loopback feature performs system diagnostics. With four times the throughput of the single-channel XR20V2170, the XR20V2172 is an ideal fit in next-generation high-performance applications in which multiple ports are required. The XR20M1172 comes in 28-pin TSSOP and 32-pin QFN packages. The XR20V2172 comes in a 64-pin QFN package.
