Reducing board space and costs, the Yukon FE+ 88E8040 embarks as what may be the industry's smallest PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller for mobile and desktop PCs. The chip is available in a 48-pin QFN package measuring 7 mm x 7 mm, and is also available in a larger 64-pin QFN package that is pin compatible with existing Yukon-family devices. The 88E8040 also features smart power-down modes to extend battery time and to enable Energy Star compliance. It supports capabilities such as IPv6 and IPv4 checksum offloads and receive-side scaling as well as the company's Virtual Cable Tester technology for cable diagnostics.
