In a12-pin, 2.5 mm x 4 mm SON package, the bq27500 system-side battery fuel gauge predicts battery life with 99% accuracy to extend run-time and protect data in handheld products, such as smartphones. The device measures a single-cell li-ion battery to predict remaining battery capacity under all conditions including age. Monitoring and storing real-time battery impedance values, the chip automatically adjusts to changes in full capacity as a battery ages. State-of-charge and full capacity, calculated from voltage and impedance measurements, eliminates the need to re-learn from a charge and discharge cycle. The bq27500 sets up on the host system board and supports either an embedded or removable battery. Available now, price is $1.35 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
