Low-rho (low resistance) surface-mount devices (SMDs) developed by TE Circuit Protection provide overcurrent and overtemperature protection for battery-pack protection circuit modules (PCMs) in compact mobile electronics, such as smartphones, and MP3/4 players. The SMD series, which features nine models, comes in 1210 (3.0 by 2.54 mm), 1206 (3.0 by 1.52 mm) or 1812 (3.0 by 4.57 mm) form factors. They can be assembled with a reflowable soldering technique, as opposed to the spot welding process required by many components, which saves board space and production costs. After the reflow process, resistance lowers to 10 to 25 mΩ, thus reducing power and improving battery efficiency. All series devices are designed for 2-A and higher operating current.
