Targeting the February 2009 transition from analog to digital TV, the UCC28061 dual-phase PFC controller with Natural Interleaving technology and the TPS54331 SWIFT dc/dc power management converter promise to boost energy efficiency in and reduce the size of digital TVs. Based on the existing UCC28060 PFC controller, the UCC28061 reportedly facilitates the thinnest LCD TVs to date by incorporating smaller EMI filters, smaller or fewer output capacitors, and fewer boost inductors. The device includes phase management and burst mode features and is suitable for meeting ENERGY STAR and 80 Plus efficiency standards. The TPS54331 SWIFT dc/dc converter allegedly reduces power consumption in point-of-load circuit board designs and its light-load increases energy efficiency by more than 25% when compared to conventional converters. Features include a unique Eco-mode switching technique, 110-µA operating current, 1-µA shutdown current, an input range from 3.5V to 28V, output voltage adjustable down to 0.8V, and an output current to 3A. Prices for the UCC28061 and TPS54331 are $1.30 and $1.35 each/1,000, respectively. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
