Two companies have announced their support for Carrier Grade Linux 2.0, which targets telecom equipment manufacturers and network equipment providers. Wind River and TimeSys both are delivering products based on the 2.6 Linux kernel.

The Platform for Network Equipment: Linux Edition from Wind River supports Transparent Inter Process Communication (TIPC). This matches recent support for TIPC in Wind River's VxWorks real-time operating system, permitting interprocess communications in a mixed VxWorks/Linux environment.

Also, the platform supports products from Radisys, Intel, and other companies in the AdvancedTCA arena. It includes a complete suite of development tools built around Wind River's Workbench, which is an Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE).

The TimeSys CGL 2.0 Upgrade Program is TimeSys' answer for telecom and network services. It includes 2.4- and 2.6-based kernel development kits. The TimeStorm suite of Eclipse-powered development and testing tools can target applications for any Linux distribution, not just the CGL 2.0 environment.

The TimeSys Reservations add-on module to the TimeStorm Linux Development Kit (LDK) lets tasks reserve a fixed amount of CPU and network bandwidth. TimeSys CGL 2.0 targets the x86 and PowerPC processors. Initial support includes boards from Freescale, IBM, AMCC, SBE, and Curtiss-Wright.

The annual subscription for the TimeSys CGL 2.0 Upgrade Program is $48,000. Wind River's annual subscription starts at $5000. Its reference design release is available now.
