Premier Farnell, an international multi-channel electronics distributor, has chosen its judging panel for the design competition called "Live EDGE" (Electronic Design for the Global Environment). The competition allows engineers and students to compete by designing electronic products that are environmentally friendly.

Among this year's panel of judges are Sir Peter Gershon, chairman of Premier Farnell and fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering; John Noble, director of Torus Technologies and 2007 Live EDGE winner; Steve Sanghi, chairman of the board, Microchip Technology; and Paul Goodman, an expert who provides consultancy on environmental legislation.

The Live EDGE judges will base their decision on such criteria as usefulness of the application, originality and innovation, technical merit, effect on the global environment, feasibility of the design, efficient use of energy, and end of life consideration. Participants can register via the Live EDGE website at www.live-edge.com. The Web site will soon feature social networking tools and a community forum for engineers to share and develop ideas.

The winning entrant for both the full-time student and the general/open category will receive a cash prize of $25,000 as well as a design support package valued at an additional $25,000 to move their design towards production. Entries must be submitted by January 31, 2009, and winners will be announced on April 2, 2009. The competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
