Power-Management IC Targets OLED Display Applications

The Maxim Integrated Products MAX17065 power-management IC integrates all the power functions required for active-matrix OLED displays in portable consumer devices.

The MAX17065 power-management IC (PMIC) from Maxim Integrated Products includes a step-up dc-dc converter, an inverting dc-dc converter, regulated positive and negative charge pumps, and a low-dropout linear regulator (LDO). This one IC integrates all the power functions required for the active-matrix, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays used in cell phones, digital still cameras (DSCs), MP3 players, and other consumer products.

The device operates from a +2.3- to +4.5-V input supply, and its step-up converter provides a fixed +5.35-V output with up to 94% efficiency. The inverting converter produces an adjustable –0.5- to –5-V output and is up to 83% efficient. Each switching converter has cycle-by-cycle current limit, selectable SKIP and forced-PWM (pulse-width modulation) modes, and a selectable switching frequency of 600 kHz/1.2 MHz that allows for the use of small external inductors. The output voltage of the positive charge pump can be programmed between +5.5 and +9 V, while the negative charge pump can be programmed between –0.5 V and –5 V. The LDO provides a +1.9-V output for loads up to 60 mA.

To save board space, the MAX17065 eliminates external power components by integrating synchronous rectifiers. In addition, an I2C-compatible interface programs the switching frequency, operating mode, and current limit of the step-up and inverting converters, as well as the output voltages of the inverting converter and charge pumps.

The MAX17065 is available in a 4- by 4-mm, 28-pin thin quad flat no-lead (TQFN) package and is fully specified over the –40°C to 85°C extended temperature range. Pricing starts at $1.20 in 1000-unit lots.
