Simplifying SONET/SDH/ATM designs through higher integration, the S3038 is claimed as the first OC-12 (622-Mbps) CMOS quad transceiver. By combining the functionality of four transceivers into one 23 mm x 23 mm, 208-pin TBGA, the 3.3V transceiver IC provides a ready upgrade path for migration to boards with a higher number of ports. The device consumes just 675 mW per channel.The chip provides clock generation and recovery functions for OC-12 scrambled NRZ data recovery, performs mux/demux functions, and is selectable to a 38.88-MHz or 77.76-MHz reference clock. It also features local loopback for system diagnostics, a lock detect function, SONET/SDH frame detection, and a low jitter LVPECL interface. It's compatible with several network interface devices and meets ANSI, Bellcore and ITU-T specs.
