Cell phones, pagers, PDAs, and other portable products using single-cell Li-Ion battery packs are prime candidates for a newBiCMOS IC for protecting the cells from over charging and over discharging. The UCC3952 Li-Ion battery protector contains a low, 50-milliohm on-resistance MOSFET that reduces circuit board component count and a charge pump that reduces power losses while charging or discharging battery packs with low cell voltage. The chip can operate and safely shut down in the presence of a short-circuit load and provides over-current protection with a preset time delay. It comes in four standard over-voltage thresholds (4.20V, 4.25V, 4.30V and 4.35V), with each threshold having a max. tolerance of 50 mV from -20°C to 70°C, allowing for full battery charge restoration. The IC comes in 18-pin bump chip carrier (BCC) and 16-pin TSSOP (PW) or SOIC (DP) packages.
