Two power supply manufacturers have recently announced development of the industryÕs first one-eighth-size dc/dc converters. The one-eighth bricks require about 60% less board space than the well-established quarter brick units, while also offering the same pin-out as the quarter bricks. Here are some key details on each of these two new power sources. With a footprint of 0.9" x 2.3" and a height as small as 0.26", the SQ48 series of dc/dc converters can deliver in an one-eighth brick size package 15A of current with minimal or no derating at elevated temperatures and low airflowÑthe thermal rating of the new converters in typical telecomm applications is said to exceed that of most 20A-30A quarter bricks. The lightweight (0.53 oz.) SQ48 converters do not require heatsinks, have a power density of 90W/in.3, operate from voltages of 36 to 75 Vdc, and are available with standard outputs of 3.3V, 2.5V, 2.0V, 1.8V, 1.5V and 1.2V. The one-eighth bricks come in open-frame through-hole and surface-mount versions. Price: $64 each/1,000. Samples are available. For more details, call Bob Cantrell at DI/DT INC., Carlsbad, CA.
