Taking their place among the industry’s fastest 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), the eight-bit TMP86FM48U and TMP86FM48F operate at speeds up to 8 MHz on 1.8V with a maximum speed of 16 MHz operating on 2.7V to 3.6V. This level of performance is said to be the result of a proprietary 8-bit microprocessor, 870/C core and NAND-type EEPROM. Both MCUs include 512 bytes of data EEPROM and 32 KB of flash memory that can be programmed via a UART, making it possible to program and reprogram the device after the chip has been mounted on a board. Other features include a power control function that turns off power to the flash memory when it's not in use, 8- and 16-bit counter/timers, base timer, an a/d converter, interrupt sources, serial communication controllers, and an LED driver. Samples are available now priced at $6.67 each/100 with volume production scheduled for May. TOSHIBA AMERICA ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS INC., Irvine, CA. (800) 879-4963.
