Five leading embedded single board computer manufacturers have announced the publication of a new industry standard for small form factor embedded computer boards. Dubbed the Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing, or EPIC, the standard provides a platform on which to build next-generation embedded systems for industrial, medical, military, transportation and commercial applications. The 4.5" x 6.5" EPIC form factor is sized about halfway between PC/104 and EBX-type boards and contains a PC/104 module stack area, a tall CPU and power zone, and multiple I/O zones. Published as an open standard by Micro/sys, Octagon Systems, VersaLogic Corp., WinSystems and Ampro Computers Inc., the specification is available for download free of charge from the organization’s web site. For more information on EPIC, contact any of the member companies, including WINSYSTEMS INC., Arlington, TX. (817) 274-7553.
