6A/20W POL Converter Fits Into A Tiny Package

April 4, 2005
The diminutive EN5360 point-of-load (POL) converter measures just 2.2 mm in height and consumes just 138 mm2 of board space, but is capable of delivering up to 20W of output power and 6A of output current, all with peak efficiency in excess

The diminutive EN5360 point-of-load (POL) converter measures just 2.2 mm in height and consumes just 138 mm2 of board space, but is capable of delivering up to 20W of output power and 6A of output current, all with peak efficiency in excess of 92%. This represents a power density of 700W per cubic inch. Including a minimum of four external components, an entire dc/dc converter can set up residence in as little as 163 square millimeters of single-sided, or 138 square millimeters of double-sided board space. The converter accepts input voltages from 2.375V to 5.5V and operates from common voltage rails of 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5V. Output voltage is VID pin selectable with options for seven standard voltages ranging from 0.8V to 3.3V via a resistor divider setting that allows a continuous set-point range from 0.8V to VIN. Protection features include over current, short circuit, over and under voltage, and thermal shutdown. Price is $7.45 each/1,000. ENPIRION, Bridgewater, NJ. (908) 575-7550.
