Groomed for smart-sensor applications, the dsPIC33FJ12GP digital signal controller (DSC) family logs in as the first such devices in 18-pin, 6 mm x 6 mm packages, making them possibly the smallest on the market. Providing 40 MIPS performance, the chips integrate ADCs providing up to 1.1 Msamples/s to facilitate over sampling and improve signal-to-noise ratios. They are said to have sufficient performance and resources to serve as the sole processor in some smart-sensor systems. They also feature peripheral pin select, allowing users to re-map digital I/O to optimize board layout. Other features include 12 KB of flash memory, 1 KB of RAM, and one UART, one SPI, and one I2C port per device. Prices start at $1.99 each/10,000. MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY INC., Chandler, AZ.
