Claiming a milestone in system performance, the Impact reference backplane is capable of transferring at rates in excess of 15 Gb/s NRZ over a one-meter channel. The backplane, employing a 65-nm embedded SerDes from Avago Technologies over combined laminates, generates and recovers 15-Gb/s signals through an aggregate of 0.25 meters of FR4, 0.27 meters of FR408, and 0.5 meters of Nelco-N4000-13SI. The Impact reference backplane system, a multi-variable design tool, incorporates different routing designs, multiple anti-pad and launch styles, and several plated through-hole lengths and diameters. It combines a full range of differential PCB channel lengths and coupling options, allowing users to manipulate design variables that influence transmission quality from transmitter to receiver. Additionally, bottom and top channel routings evaluate transmission performance throughout the board height while a loop-back feature allows for testing and designing outboard components.
