The MAX3518, an upstream amplifier for the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0, combines extremely low power consumption with equally low distortion. This device consumes just 1.25 W when configured for 31 dB of gain and +64 dBmVout. Moreover, it consumes an ultra-low 25 mW in transmit-disabled mode, while achieving a low, 10-dB noise figure and 60 dBc of harmonic distortion. The device’s low power consumption reduces power-supply requirements and extends battery life in battery-backup systems, thus making it suitable for cable and VoIP modems. The MAX3518 operates from a single 5-V supply that connects to a single pin on the device, greatly simplifying circuit board routing and reducing the required number of external components to only one balun and five 1-nF capacitors. The addition of a standard anti-aliasing filter results in a complete upstream solution. The MAX3518 is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range, and is available in a 5-mm x 5-mm, 20-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $5 each in lots of 1000. Evaluation kits and reference designs are available. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
