SanDisk's iSSD (Fig. 1) is a SATA flash drive on a chip. It's ideal for embedded applications providing high speed transfers in a compact package. Sequential read performance is 160 Mbyte/s and write speeds of 100 Mbytes/s. The chip uses a 3 Gbit/s SATA II interface.

The compact size of the iSSD and its standard disk drive interface makes it a good candidate for small form factor modules like the Small Form Factor SIG's MiniBlade (Fig. 2). The chip will also find a home on motherboards as a default boot device.

The iSSD supports SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) monitoring. It also supports the Trim command that returns a sector to free space.

The iSSD is available in 4, 8, 16G, 32, and 64 Gbytes. The chip is a 157 ball BGA with a 0.5mm pitch. The package size is 16 mm by 20 mm by 1.85 mm. The chip uses 3.3V, 2V and 1V supplies. In sleep mode the typical power requirement is 60mW. Average active power is 1W. Average power is 0.18W. The chips come with a 3 year warranty.
