Smart Meter Regulator Eases Design Tasks

The MAX17497 power regulator addresses all the power requirements on the communications and metrology boards in smart meters.

The MAX17497 power regulator addresses all the power requirements on the communications and metrology boards in smart meters. It integrates control circuitry for the universal-input, non-isolated flyback power supplies, and a secondary-side synchronous buck regulator with integrated MOSFETs. All integrated functions support supplies for a powerline communication driver or RF transceiver, the PLC/RF modem (2.5V/3.3V), a circuit-breaker relay, and the regulated supplies for the metrology and application chips. Operating at 250 kHz/500 kHz, the flyback regulator avoids the frequencies used in smart meter communications and thus mitigates frequency interference. The inputs for under-voltage lockout and over-voltage thresholds are programmable. Available in a 3 mm x 3 mm TQFN package, prices start at $1.45 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA.
