A series of color active-matrix, thin film transistor (TFT) LCD modules employs long-life, LED backlight systems with a mean time between failure (MTBF) of 100,000 hours (approximately 11.4 years). The modules are designed for a broad range of industrial applications, such as test-and-measurement equipment, medical equipment, and mobile computing devices. They’re designed with a replaceable backlight structure to accommodate product longevity requirements encountered in some harsh industrial environments. The series includes eight LCD products available in four screen sizes: 5.7 inches, 8.4 inches, 10.4 inches, and 12.1 inches. Display resolutions are QVGA (320 x 240) and VGA (640 x 480) for the 5.7-inch module, and SVGA (800 x 600) and XGA (1024 x 768) for the three larger sizes. Compared to CCFL-backlit displays, the mercury-free LED-backlit displays feature lower electromagnetic noise and lower power consumption, and offer a wider adjustable luminance range. Also, the new LED-backlit displays do not require the high-voltage and high-frequency circuits needed to control luminance in CCFL-backlit displays. Volume production of the new LCD displays is expected by the end of the year. TOSHIBA AMERICA ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS INC., Irvine, CA. (949) 623-2900.
