Designed to drive color electrically controlled birefingence (ECB) LCDs, the MAX1729 step-up dc-to-dc converters provide an accuracy of ±1% bias voltage and an on-chip temperature monitor that ensures consistent display color and contrast with varying input voltage and temperature. Intended for use with low-cost color displays for cell phones, PDAs, and other small handhelds, the converters include a current boost converter that draws 60 µA quiescent followed by a low-dropout regulator to minimize noise and ripple. They provide an accurate adjustable output voltage, and include a temperature sensor to let the display controller match the color and temperature characteristics of the display.
