Multifunction LDO leads to cost-effective designs

A 1.5A LDO developed by Microchip is claimed as the first to incorporate shutdown, power good, programmable power-good delay, and bond-wire compensation on one chip. The efficient MCP1727 is an adjustable-output, low-power LDO that comes in small, thermally capable packages (8-pin SOIC or 3 mm × 3 mm DFN).

The combination of high output current (1.5A) and low output voltage (down to 0.8V) suits the MCP1727 for various power-supply applications, such as high-performance embedded processors.

The device offers a dropout voltage of only 300mV (typical) at full load current, and a quiescent current of just 140µA (typical). In addition, the MCP1727 offers a shutdown feature that allows it to be enabled and disabled by system logic. More efficient and cost-effective designs are possible due to the fact that the device is stable when using a ceramic output capacitor.

The MCP1727 also has an output-voltage sense pin that compensates for output-voltage changes due to losses in the output bond wire, resulting in faster, more accurate output-voltage regulation. The power-good output with user-programmable delay gives designers flexibility in power scheduling.
