scope |Look Out, Volt—Chrysler Announces Three Electric Vehicles By Richard Gawel, Managing Editor
Perhaps in response to GM’s announcement of its production-ready Volt electric car last week, Chrysler has unveiled plans to use similar electric-drive technology in three of its vehicles. The company will select one of its electric-drive models to be produced for consumers in North American markets in 2010 and one for European markets after that. CriticalBlue

Over the last few years, the electronics industry has seen a varied range of exotic new multicore processor architectures, 54 at our last count. While many of the inventors of these fascinating devices have promoted them as general solutions, only a few have seen success, and then in very specific application spaces. So what is the tipping point for an embedded multicore processor to achieve broad acceptance across multiple industry sectors? Some Basic Math Creates A Low-Cost Nonlinear Thermocouple Interface
Measurement and process control loops often use 8-bit microcontrollers. The devices are inexpensive and widely available, and they can be programmed in many popular high-level languages—like C and Basic. However, if the loop requires a nonlinear sensor, the designer faces the added challenge of having to develop a software linearization algorithm. Read the full article...

Engineering TV | D-BOX: Putting the "Motion" in Motion Pictures At CEDIA 2008, Philippe Roy, Chief Technology Officer for D-BOX, discusses how his company is bringing home entertainment into a whole new dimension. D-BOX Motion Code is a sophisticated, groundbreaking technology that creates real-life motion perfectly synchronized to on-screen movie and gaming action. All the motion is encoded frame by frame by a skilled D-BOX motion artist. You simply pop your Blu-ray disc or DVD of a title that appears in the D-BOX Motion Code Library (over 800 titles currently available) in your Blu-ray or DVD player. The D-BOX Controller automatically matches the movie in the player, downloads the corresponding D-BOX Motion Code and sends it to your D-BOX-equipped seating. Its home theater seating and racing and flight simulator models for gaming use proprietary advanced robotics technology with built-in commercial-grade motion actuators including pistons, low-friction motion devices, and high-tech motors. They’re small but powerful and robust and can produce up to 2 Gs of acceleration.
