Teledyne LeCroy has announced the addition of measurement and graphing capabilities to its CAN Flexible Data-Rate (FD) serial trigger and decode solution. Teledyne LeCroy provided a trigger and decode solution for CAN FD in June of this year. The new CAN FD trigger and decode solution with measurement and graphing capabilities (CAN FD TDM) enables designers using this new standard to gain insight in to their systems, correlating physical-layer signals and protocol-layer data on a single display while also measuring and plotting bus performance. These tools can be used to measure the time between two CAN or CAN FD messages, or from a message to an analog signal. These measurements can then be extracted to recreate analog waveforms.
CAN FD TDM links dedicated CAN FD triggering with CAN FD timing and message data evaluation. The CAN FD trigger can isolate frame IDs, specific data packets, remote frames, and error frames. The decode uses a color-coded overlay that clearly identifies different parts of the data being captured, allowing the user to quickly identify different parts of the CAN FD data. The new CAN FD TDM provides specific CAN FD measurement parameters for quick and easy accumulation of statistical information on a wide variety of events, and it provides graphical display tools that permit visualization of the data.
Along with providing a method of displaying decoded data, Teledyne LeCroy offers the ability to decode four buses simultaneously. These four busses can be a combination of any protocols, including CAN FD and classic CAN at the same time. Decoded data can also be seen in an interactive table. Entries in this table can be selected and automatically zoomed, preventing the need to scroll through long records. A search function is built in to the zoom trace to quickly locate a specific Frame ID or data message.
Teledyne LeCroy pioneered serial data trigger and decode in an oscilloscope with the introduction of the original CAN trigger and decode product in 2004. Since then, the patented algorithms used to deconstruct physical layer serial data signals and display decoded data have been deployed to simplify the design and debug of automotive systems using LIN, FlexRay, SENT, and now CAN FD. In addition to support for automotive standards, Teledyne LeCroy has a range of serial bus trigger and decode solutions ranging from I2C and UART to USB3 and PCIe Gen 3.
What is CAN Flexible Data (FD) Rate?
CAN FD is the next generation of the popular CAN standard. As CAN has reached the bandwidth limits of what it can transmit, CAN FD enables higher bit rates and longer data payloads. CAN FD goes beyond the 1-Mb/s limit of classic CAN and will transmit data at up to 10 Mb/s. CAN FD data payloads may now consist of 64 bytes per frame as opposed to the 8-byte/frame limit of classic CAN.
CAN FD TDM is available on a variety of Teledyne LeCroy oscilloscopes and has a U.S. list price of $4,650. Teledyne LeCroy oscilloscope users who already have CAN or CAN FD Trigger and Decode can upgrade their system to CAN or CAN FD TDM.
