Vitesse broadens signal-integrity portfolio for high-speed data

Jan. 20, 2015

Vitesse Semiconductor, a provider of IC solutions to advance “Ethernet Everywhere” in carrier, enterprise, and Internet of Things (IoT) networks, has introduced the VSC7112, an 8.5-Gb/s quad-channel signal conditioner targeted at the expanding PCIe 3.0 market. Building on the reliability and success of Vitesse’s signal-integrity IC portfolio with the company’s FlexEQ adaptive equalization technology, the VSC7112 enables the industry’s lowest BOM cost solution for PCIe Gen 3.0 repeater applications, offering 20% savings over competitive options, the company reported. The VSC7112 is suitable for solving signal-integrity challenges as the PCIe protocol expands beyond consumer peripherals into blade servers, enterprise storage, and cloud computing.

“PCIe Gen 3.0 brings a host of design challenges, including backward compatibility, the need to often cover longer distances with higher throughput, and power/area considerations,” said Gary Paules, product marketing manager at Vitesse. “Vitesse’s VSC7112 repeater delivers proven reliability, increased layout flexibility, and overall lower systems costs in applications where short PCIe links are simply not possible. Our signal-conditioner portfolio is engineered for system designers to take full advantage of network capacity to accommodate growing demands for high-speed networking and data transmission.”

Vitesse offers a range of signal-conditioning ICs across port speeds, channel counts, and feature sets for applications in carrier, enterprise, data center, as well as broadcast and professional video. Based on a production-proven silicon platform with a failure-in-time (FIT) rate well below 10 ppm, the VSC7112 delivers high performance input equalization and output pre-emphasis enabling 30-dB loss compensation over a 50-inch channel with multiple connectors, ensuring sufficient system margin over and reliable connectivity between PCIe hosts and peripherals.

Independent testing has confirmed the applicability of the VSC7112 in PCIe Gen 3.0 repeater applications. “Based on extensive testing performed here, the VSC7112 proved itself to be an excellent signal conditioning device, well suited for the numerous PCIe Gen 3.0 implementations we are seeing in the industry,” said Vamshi Kandalla, vice president and general manager of Granite River Labs, a global provider of test solutions specializing in new and emerging technologies.
