Anritsu introduces 64G mux/demux modules for BERT

June 4, 2015

Anritsu has introduced the MP1861A 56/64 Gb/s mux and MP1862A 56/64 Gb/s demux for its MP1800A BERT signal quality analyzer to support 56/64 Gb/s BER measurements required by signal-integrity engineers to accurately evaluate high-speed serial transmission devices. The integrated solution supports generation of NRZ data and BER measurements up to 64.2 Gb/s, as well as jitter tolerance and bathtub jitter measurements in accordance with the latest CEI-56G and 400GbE standards, for measurement of PHY devices such as SerDes used in high-speed servers and network equipment.

Combining the new MP1861A mux with the 32-Gb/s 2-channel pulse pattern generator (PPG) in the MP1800A supports generation of NRZ data signals at up to 64.2 Gb/s. Similarly, combining the MP1862A 56/64-Gb/s demux with the 32-Gb/s error detector (ED) built in the MP1800A supports reception and BER measurement of signals up to 64.2 Gb/s.

High performance and accuracy is assured due to the excellent signal quality and Rx sensitivity of the mux/demux. The MP1861A mux has a low intrinsic jitter waveform of typically 200 fs rms random jitter (RJ), plus wide output over a broad amplitude range up to 3.5 Vp-p (7 Vp-p differential). The MP1862A demux has high input sensitivity of 25 mVp-p (typical, eye height) for high-accuracy measurement of semiconductor chip characteristics. Both modules have compact remote heads that minimize cable effects for assured high signal quality.

Expanding the existing MP1800A 32 Gb/s BERT to either 56 Gb/s or 64 Gb/s supports a simple upgrade path to 100GbE to 400GbE research and development. The MP1800A with jitter generation module can generate SJ.

Dual-tone SJ, RJ, BUJ, and SSC can also be injected independently and simultaneously. Bathtub jitter measurements at the demux side are also possible while generating a jittered-data signal from the mux. This is beneficial when measuring the jitter tolerance and bathtub jitter of high-speed serial transmission devices, such as SerDes, and supports CEI-56G and 400GbE by delivering high accuracy and sufficient margin.

Anritsu’s MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer series is a plug-in, modular-type BERT simultaneously accommodating PPG, ED, synthesizer, and jitter generation modules. It supports concurrent generation of synchronous signals and measurement of bit error rates (BERs) for up to eight channels by installing multiple 32 Gb/s PPG and ED modules.
