PCTEST Lab adds eMBMS capability from Rohde & Schwarz

Aug. 12, 2015

Columbia, MD. PCTEST Engineering Laboratory Inc. (PCTEST LAB), an accredited testing laboratory for wireless testing and certification, has upgraded its R&S TS8980FTA-2, R&S CMW-PQA, and R&S CMW500 systems to accommodate the new eMBMS test plans for 3GPP conformance and carrier acceptance testing.

Mobile wireless carriers are focusing an increasing amount of attention to mobile video delivery. Video content already makes up a majority of all internet traffic, and it continues to grow. The introduction of Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) for LTE-Advanced networks holds considerable promise. eMBMS provides native support for broadcasting and multicasting in a wireless IP environment. In addition, eMBMS provides increased spectral efficiency at the cell edge, with low power consumption.

In order to ensure a successful introduction of eMBMS technology onto LTE networks, eMBMS testing includes conformance, functional, and performance testing to ensure the overall quality of the end-user’s experience. This also includes the important aspects of validating that the eMBMS service does not interfere or impact other applications running on the device, such as receiving voice calls or dialing E-911.

“Delivering video over mobile networks is the next big hurdle for mobile operators to overcome,” said Randy Ortanez, president of PCTEST Lab. “eMBMS holds tremendous promise to deliver video effectively and cost efficiently. The test requirements for eMBMS cut across several different areas, including video performance, all of which present us with significant technical challenges. Rohde & Schwarz helps us meet these challenges by consistently providing us with the test solutions and test cases we need to keep up with our customer demands.”

PCTEST Lab is an independent test laboratory offering one-stop conformance, performance, and regulatory testing of wireless devices in accordance with industry and 3GPP/3GPP2 technical requirements, including RF, protocol, RRM, Release 10 carrier aggregation, and carrier-specific test plans. PCTEST Lab is an approved VoLTE Lab, LTE/CDMA Safe-For-Network (SFN) Lab, an Open Development Lab, an OTA Antenna Performance Lab, and an A-GPS test facility for major U.S. carriers offering GCF and PTCRB certifications.
