Medical Product Focus: Getting a head start on device design and manufacturing
Medical electronics design demands reliability and compliance—from design through manufacturing. You can get a boost in the design stage by employing components and subsystems built for medical electronics applications, such as the power supplies and regulators highlighted here as well as a helpful power-supply configurator. Two of the products listed are complementary: a flyback voltage regulator and flyback transformers. For manufacturing, a vapor-phase soldering system can provide the needed reliability. Also included in this sampler is a pharmaceutical temperature monitoring app.
The online Power Supply Configurator has been enhanced to align with the newly introduced CoolX Series 600-W convection-cooled power supplies. It also has added options for searching for new capabilities, features, and functions offered by the vendor’s Xgen, UltiMod, and Xsolo product lines. The enhanced online configurator enables system designers to quickly and cost-effectively define and build “instant” custom power supplies optimized for their specific application.

An alternative to an inline convection oven, the new 4040 Vapor Phase Soldering System allows SMT assemblers to easily and affordably capitalize on this technology’s numerous advantages, including soldering quality, the ability to perform instant product changeovers, and 0% risk of overheating.
It is particularly suitable for manufacturers of high component-mix assemblies with BGAs and other complex SMDs where uniform soldering temperatures and long-term product reliability are critical—such as in medical, military, and avionics applications. Manncorp
The ME40 family of 40-W AC/DC external medical-grade power supplies is specifically designed to meet the power requirements of home healthcare devices such as patient-monitoring equipment and respiratory devices that require a high level of EMC, EMI, and AC-input performance. The design of these power supplies adheres to the latest medical device standard, IEC 60601-1 3rd Edition, as well as the new U.S. Department of Energy’s level VI efficiency requirements of minimum no-load power and efficiency.
The new ME40 Series models complement the vendor’s external power-supply product offering with incremental power levels from 10 W to 240 W and various DC output connector options, providing maximum flexibility. Featuring a three-year warranty, pricing for the ME40 Series models starts at $19.75 for OEM quantities. The supplies are available now through SL Power’s worldwide distribution sales channels. Flyback regulator
The LT8303 monolithic flyback regulator in a TSOT-23 package simplifies the design of isolated DC/DC converters. By sampling the isolated output voltage directly from the primary-side flyback waveform, the part does not require an opto-isolator or third winding for regulation. The LT8303 operates over a 5.5-V to 100-V input voltage range, has a 0.45-A/150-V integrated DMOS power switch, and delivers up to 5 W of output power, making it suitable for medical applications.
The output voltage is set with only one external resistor and the transformer turns ratio. Several off-the-shelf transformers, identified in the datasheet, can be used for numerous applications. The LT8303 operates in boundary mode, which is a variable frequency current mode control switching scheme, typically resulting in ±5% output voltage regulation over the full line, load, and temperature range. Flyback transformers
Developed in partnership with Linear Technology, new MID-ILTFLY flyback transformers for LT8303 and LT8304 regulator reference designs are pick-and-placeable micropower transformers featuring low profiles, small form factors, low leakage inductance, and good EMI performance. These new flyback transformers are suited for implementing isolated power supplies in medical applications. Isolation voltage is 1,875 VAC at 1 s. The transformers are designed to meet IEC/UL/EN60950-1 standards. Würth Electronics Midcom
Pharmaceutical-monitoring app
Leveraging the ease-of-use of mobile devices, the CX400 Series provides an affordable and accessible alternative to USB-based loggers, which require more steps to operate, and manual thermometers, which are susceptible to error and have contributed to the loss of vaccine supplies and efficacy around the globe.
Designed to simplify compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine monitoring guidelines, InTemp CX400 loggers simplify and augment the monitoring process by incorporating daily temperature checks into the logger record as an option, speeding up logger setup and download, and streamlining the capability to share historical temperature data. Low pressure, compact sensor
The BLC Series low-pressure compact sensor offers design engineers performance over pressure ranges of ±1 inH2O through ±30 inH2O and 15 PSIA. The BLC Series sensor is based on the vendor’s CoBeam2 technology. The devices provide a high output signal at a low operating voltage, maintaining comparable output levels to traditional equivalent basic sensing elements. This lower supply voltage gives rise to an improved warm-up shift while the CoBeam2 technology itself reduces package stress susceptibility, resulting in improved overall long-term stability.
The technology also improves position sensitivity compared to conventional single-die devices. Applications for this sensor include medical devices, medical instrumentation, environmental controls, and portable/handheld devices. All Sensors
Medical power supplies
The TPP 40 and TPP 65 Series of 40- and 65-W AC/DC power supplies are extended by multi-output models and models in open-frame format with pin connectors. The latest medical safety report (60601-1 3rd edition, 2 x MOPP) includes a list of variants, which facilitates the offering of customized models. The TPP models are suitable for medical devices and demanding safety and space-critical applications. Traco Power
