Blackhawk debuts ARM JTAG isolator

Oct. 4, 2019

CERRITOS, CA. Blackhawk, part of the Corelis/EWA family, announced that its Blackhawk ARM Isolation Adapter (ISOARM) is a device that interfaces your debug probe and the JTAG connector on your target board. The adapter is designed to minimize and protect connected devices (PC, emulator, or target) from ground-loop voltages, harsh environments, and new, untested designs.

The isolation adapter supports IEEE 1149.1 (JTAG) and Serial Wire Debug (SWD), and 1.8-V, 3.3-V, and 5.0-V targets. It also includes three common ARM JTAG connections (standard 20-pin as well as 10- and 20-pin ARM Cortex).

The ISOARM expects the target board to provide between 20 and 80 mA of 1.8 V, 3.3 V, or 5.0 V on JTAG pin 1 (VCC) to power the adapter's target-side components. The emulator side is also powered by the target, which is why you may need up to 80 mA when using 1.8-V I/Os (less for 3.3 V or 5.0 V). If the target cannot provide enough current to power the emulator side, you can switch off power to the emulator side bringing the current down to 20 to 25 mA and use one of the other power options (power from emulator or USB cable).

Two green LEDs on the ISOARM indicate when there is power applied to the target and emulator sides of the adapter. The red LED is used for the nRESET JTAG signal and illuminates when that signal is active (low). Two switches enable support of both standard JTAG and SWD protocols. The switches must be in the same position, JTAG or SWD, to match the desired protocol.
