Taking an innovative path, the STw4141 dc/dc converter generates two different output voltages using a single external coil. This approach predicts a 40% reduction in material costs and a 30% reduction in board real estate when compared to current design practices. Requiring no resistive dividers to set output voltages, a complete power supply subsystem can be implemented within 56 mm2 of board space. The converter offers common combinations of core and I/O supplies and custom voltage options in the range of 0.9V to 1.8V in 50-mV steps. Maximum load capability is 200 mA on VOUT1 (peripheral supply) and 400 mA on VOUT2 (core supply). Other features include efficiency up to 92% from below 10 mA to the 200-mA limit, soft start, and current-limit and thermal-shutdown protection. Housed in a 3 mm x 3 mm x 1.2 mm TFBGA package, price is $1.40 each/1,000. STMICROELECTRONICS INC., Lexington, MA. (888) 787-3550.
