The 2-MHz, 500-mA MCP1603 switching regulator from Microchip Technology Inc. offers adjustable or fixed output voltages, undervoltage lockout, and automatic transition from pulse-width modulation to pulse-frequency modulation.

The 2-MHz, 500-mA MCP1603 switching regulator from Microchip Technology Inc. offers adjustable or fixed output voltages, undervoltage lockout, and automatic transition from pulse-width modulation to pulse-frequency modulation. The device also boasts a low quiescent current of 45 µA, standby current of only 100 nA, and 90% efficiency, all in a thin SOT-23 or 2- by 3-mm DFN package. With an input voltage range of 5.5 to 2.7 V and either an adjustable output voltage range of 0.8 to 4.5 V or a fixed output voltage range of 1.2 to 3.3 V, the MCP1603 covers the entire lithium-ion, lithium-polymer, nickel-cadmium, and nickel-metal-hydride voltage ranges.

Microchip also released the MCP1603 Evaluation Board (MCP1603EV), which demonstrates use of the MCP1603 as a buck switcher. The board is available now at www.microchipdirect.com for $25. The MCP1603 switching regulator is also available now for $0.88 each in the TSOT-23 package and $0.95 each in the DFN package, both in quantities of 10,000. Samples can be ordered at http://sample.microchip.com. For more information, go to www,microchip.com.
