Gate-Drive Optocouplers Enhance Motor Inverter Designs

April 23, 2007
The ACPL-332J and -331J series of high-speed IGBT optocouplers from Avago Technologies are gate-drive devices that provide reliable operation in noisy environments for industrial inverter and power management applications.

The ACPL-332J and -331J series of high-speed insulated-gate, bipolar-transistor (IGBT) optocouplers improve precision and efficiency of motor inverters, according to Avago Technologies. The gate-drive devices are easy to implement in industrial inverter and power management applications, such as isolated IGBT/power MOSFET gate drives, ac and brushless dc motor drives, industrial inverters, and uninterruptible power supplies. Their excellent common-mode rejection ensures reliable operation in noisy environments.

Featuring a high level of integration, the optocouplers incorporate an active Miller clamp, VCE desaturation detection, undervoltage lockout protection, built-in IGBT shutdown, and isolated open-collector fault feedback. Active Miller clamping eliminates the need for a negative gate drive, saving negative power-supply draw and pc-board space. The ACPL-332J and -331J are CSA approved, and UL1577 IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2 approvals are pending. In 10,000-piece quantities, the ACPL-332J (2.5-A output) costs $3.24, and the ACPL-331J (1.5-A output) is $2.56. Both are available now. For more information, go to www.avagotech.com/optocouplers.
