Offered as part of the Xilinx AllianceCORE IP program, the Lightfoot 32-bit, Java processor is said to work from a tiny memory footprint and provide performance levels in excess of 40 MIPS. The device promises single-chip control of connected embedded systems without the cost and time spent with ASIC development.A number of proprietary features are employed in the architecture and virtual machine to speed and simplify language execution. These features allow the processor to execute most bytecodes in a single instruction cycle. In addition, the processor allows users to create custom instructions without making any changes to the FPGA netlist. A development kit that includes the processor, circuit board and a variety of hardware is available. Development cards cost $399 and evaluation licenses start from $5,000.
