ROCHESTER, NY: January 7, 2005 -- Rochester MicroSystems, Inc. (RMI), an international provider of contract electronic design services for industry and research, has introduced a new service for customers who need fast answers about the RoHS compliance status of their circuit boards and electronic components.

The European Economic Union's "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" (RoHS) Directive bans the sale of most new electronic equipment in Europe after July 1, 2006 if it contains more than trace levels of lead and five other hazardous chemicals. China, California and Maine have already passed similar legislation and the "lead-free" movement has become virtually global.

Leading electronics manufacturers have begun reworking their product offerings to meet RoHS requirements, but it can be difficult and time-consuming to analyze the compliance status of all the individual components on a specific circuit board. "We've talked to customers who think they have plenty of time to work through these compliance issues, but the reality is that any company without a program in place is basically behind schedule." said RMI President/CEO Mark Corio. "Our new service provides a fast, cost-effective way to obtain the necessary compliance information and supporting documentation." For $35 per BOM line-item, RMI will analyze the compliance status of each component and provide a spreadsheet report along with copies of manufacturers' compliance documentation. Alternative part numbers and/or manufacturers are identified for non-compliant passive components. Customers typically receive the results on both paper and CD-ROM within one week.

Recently honored for the second consecutive year by Inc. Magazine as one of the 500 fastest growing private companies in America, RMI provides outsourcing solutions for hardware and software development to clients such as Eastman Kodak, Hewlett Packard, start-up ventures and leading research institutions. RMI designs have been incorporated into space satellites, computer peripherals, biomedical instrumentation, optoelectronics and many other types of industrial and consumer products. The company is headquartered in Rochester, NY.
