One of the last consumer electronic circuits to yield to integration was the TV tuner. Today, tuners can be put on a single chip. Infineon Technologies' Taifun TUA 6039 bipolar/CMOS tuner integrates the RF and IF functions into a single package.

Designed for TV sets and set-top boxes, the TUA 6039 reduces pc-board space and power consumption by 50% compared to previous generations. It covers three RF bands and includes the IF automatic gain control amplifier as well as the synthesizer phase-locked loop. With a 3- to 5-V supply, total power consumption averages about 330 mW compared to the typical 600 mW drawn by comparable tuners.

The TUA 6039 is compatible with all major analog and digital standards for terrestrial and cable applications, including PAL, SECAM, NTSC, DVB-C, DVB-T, T-DMB, DAB, ISDB-T, and ATSC. It comes in a PGVQFN-48 (plastic-green very thin quad-flat no-lead) package. Volume production will be available in the third quarter. For portable applications requiring very low power consumption, the TUA 6041/6045 tuner ICs offer similar specs.
