Simics 2.0 from VirtuTech is ambitious in implementation and scope. It can simulate one board or a complete network with multiprocessor systems. The simulated systems actually run production code. For example, a simulated, multiprocessor Sparc system would run Sun's Solaris. These simulated systems can be tied together, creating a virtual test environment. Performance is a function of the system being tested, the application, and the system performing the simulation. But many applications run in real time or better. A key advantage is complete control over the simulated environment, which allows for more controlled debugging and diagnostics than in a real environment. Installations typically start at $100,000 with support for an entire engineering team.
