Claiming best-in-class efficiencies, the TOPSwitch R-HX family of ac-to-dc power conversion ICs provides up to 150W and eliminates the need for separate standby power supplies. The converters promise to accelerate compliance with the latest energy-efficiency standards for tool chargers and printer adapters. They enable power supply designs to meet proposed and existing energy standards such as CEC and ENERGY STAR, while delivering up to 48W without the need for heat sinking and up to 150W with a heat sink. A unique multi-mode control scheme provides efficient operation across the entire load range. The control algorithm transitions between different operating modes to optimize energy efficiency at all power levels, with the capability to deliver more than 600 mW of output for a 1W input and a no-load power consumption of less than 200 mW. Also unique, a power coefficient parameter is said to improve output-power limit accuracy. Available in lead-free packaging, price is $1.57 each/1,000 for the 35W TOP258PN.
