For larger LCD backlighting, the 6W CAT4106 four-channel LED driver integrates a high-power DC/DC boost converter and on-chip diagnostics to maximize efficiency in larger, general-purpose LCD backlighting applications. The device is capable of driving as many as 40 white LEDs or four strings of 10 LEDs with up to 36V per string for a total of 6W of LED output power. Its diagnostic circuit allows users to set minimum and maximum voltage limits for the acceptable range of LED-string operation through external programming resistors. The CAT4106 also features low dropout LED channels (500 mV at 175 mA) and a high-frequency PWM interface that supports multiple frequencies up to 2 kHz. Available in a 16-lead, 4 mm x 4 mm TQFN package and a 16-lead TSSOP with an exposed thermal pad, price for the CAT4106 is $1.06 each/10,000. ON SEMICONDUCTOR, Phoenix, AZ. (800) 282-9855.
