New ultraviolet blue and green LEDs have been developed that are said to offer significantly improved performance over existing devices. Based on InGaN materials with a SiC substrate, the UV LEDs (left photo) boast of high power output, long life span, shock and vibration resistance, and a -40°C to 85°C temperature range. Among the many uses of the lamps are medical systems, vending machines, and battery-operated test and detection devices. Another family, the X-brite LEDs (right photo) claim a 20% higher brightness than competitive devices. Blue X-brights have an intensity of 3,500 mcd, while the green offer up to 14,000 mcd. These come in through-hole and SMT styles. KINGBRIGHT CORP., City of Industry, CA. (909) 468-0500.
