Partnership Takes On RoHS/WEEE Issues
With the goal of making RoHS/WEEE compliance a tenured resident of the design process, EMA Design Automation, a provider of electronic design automation (EDA) products, and Ageus Solutions, RoHS/WEEE compliance specialists, join forces to provide environmental compliance solutions from design through manufacturing. EMA supplies the mechanical portion of RoHS/WEEE compliance while Ageus integrates compliance into engineering systems and business practices. Consulting, assessment, processing of mechanical components and drawings, and a comprehensive recycling network in Europe are a few of the services offered. As a result, electronics companies can focus on the core business of designing, manufacturing, and selling products as opposed to being preoccupied with conformance pressures. RoHS Program Takes Care Of Business
As the RoHS/WEEE initiative is not a one-shot deal, the RoHS Business Compliance Program emerges as a service designed to help OEMs ensure their ability to continue to develop and produce RoHS-compliant products. The program consists of a suite of services that address gap assessment, gap closure, process and tool auditing, and best practices. Gap assessment defines the delta between processes and design/PLM/ERP/CRM tools while gap closure, obviously, provides the optimal solutions for closing the gaps. In the advent of an ISO9001 audit or a due-diligence questionnaire from a EU enforcement body, process/tool auditing services promise to validate a company's preparedness. Additionally, a best practices program finds a way to improve processes and supporting/enabling tools, ensuring efficiency. For more information, call DESIGN CHAIN ASSOCIATES LLC, San Francisco, CA. Proactive Approach Ensures RoHS Conformity
Forward looking in nature, the company has developed what it describes as a comprehensive approach to ensuring that all of its standard commercial products meet RoHS-compliance standards. Over the past year, it has converted or adapted all standard opto-electronic sensor assemblies and components, fiber-optic components, LED discretes, and opto-electronic hybrids to comply with RoHS standards. The approach includes inspecting raw materials, converting solder materials and processes, and testing finished components before shipment. Custom sensor assemblies are being addressed on a case-by-case basis and are being converted to lead-free processes and RoHS-compliant materials as required by individual customers. Of course, military/aerospace, high-reliability, and automotive devices are exempt from RoHS compliance and do not fall within the requirements of the program. OPTEK TECHNOLOGY INC., Carrollton, TX. ZigBee Modules Get With The Program
As of April this year, the XBee and XBee-PRO OEM RF ZigBee modules are compliant with international RoHS compliance standards. The company expects to implement acrossthe-board compliance with all its electronic components including all 900-MHz and 2.4-GHz OEM RF modules before the July deadline. The conforming modules do not exceed the minimum acceptable levels of lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, polybrominated biphenyl, cadmium, and polybrominated diphenyl ether. Modular Connectors First To Go Lead Free
According to the company, its family of 2.54-mm pitch modular connector systems is the first to completely meet environmental requirements for lead-free and RoHS-compatible components. The family unit consists of popular brands and product types: DUBOX board-mount receptacles, shrouded headers, and crimp-to-wire terminals and housings; PV board-mount receptacles, crimp-to-wire terminals and housings; BERGSTIK un-shrouded headers; QUICKIE IDC receptacles plus slim-line and eject-latch shrouded headers; and individual and multi-position shunts. The DUBOX, PV, BERGSTIK, and QUICKIE connectors offer a range of through-hole and surface-mount parts including single-or double-row in straight or rightangle versions from 2 to 80 positions, with a maximum current rating of 3A per contact. A RoHS-compatible product specifies the suffix LF at the end of its part number. FCI, Etters, PA. (800) 237-2374.
