Cirrus Logic Inc. expands its line of digital power factor correction (PFC) ICs with the newly released CS1501/CS1601. Similar to the CS1500/CS1600, these new digital PFC devices compete with legacy analog PFC controllers by offering better performance and allowing more compact system designs.

The CS1501 and CS1601 are digitally controlled, variable frequency discontinuous conduction mode (VF-DCM), active PFC ICs for use in switch-mode power supplies rated to 300 watts. The CS1501 is built to address power supplies, such as laptop adapters, digital TVs, and PC power, while the CS1601 suits lighting applications, including LED and fluorescent electronic lighting ballasts.

PFC is required in many electronic applications around the world, as global regulations are striving to improve overall efficiency of the utility grid. Traditional analog PFC controllers are nearing the end of their capabilities to meet increasingly strict regulatory requirements and standards, and new digital products feature improvements designed to meet both current and future market demands.

Featuring the company's EXL Core architecture, with 70 digital algorithm technologies in power management and energy control, the CS1501 and CS1601 provide an advantage over legacy analog products by solving complex system level challenges that face today's power supply designers. Through its patent-pending digital noise shaping technology, both the CS1501 and CS1601 offer superior THD, power factor, and efficiency across all load conditions, while also reducing the size and number of required external components.
