What’s New in PCI Express Gen 8?

PCIe Gen 8 doubles the bandwidth to 256 GT/s. PCI-SIG’s President and Chair discusses that aspect and other next-generation features.

What you'll learn:

  • New features in PCI Express (PCIe) Gen 8.
  • What are some of the major differences between PCIe Gen 7 and 8?

The PCI-SIG PCI Express Gen 7 standard is now available, but work hasn’t stopped there. PCIe Gen 8 is on the horizon with an expected doubling of the bandwidth to 256 GT/s. This will be challenging from a number of perspectives, from support for copper connections at this speed to advances in the protocol.

I talk with Al Yanes, PCI-SIG President and Chair, about PCIe Gen 8, including where we are now, what new features will be added, and its anticipated speed.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
