Off-Line Switcher IC Expands Its Power Range

The design of smaller, lighter and more efficient power supplies for information appliances is made possible by the TNY256, the latest member of the firm’s TinySwitch family of integrated switcher ICs. The device delivers up to 11W from a universal input and up to 19W from a 230 vac input.Three new features integrated into the IC are said to reduce system cost and component count. One, auto-restart, lowers secondary component costs by reducing short-circuit current. A second, line undervoltage sense, prevents voltage glitches during power up or power down. The third, frequency jitter, lowers EMI and reduces the costs of associated filtering. The device also incorporates EcoSmart technology, which lowers power consumption in light or no-load conditions to less than 100 mW. A prototyper’s kit is available.
