Employing the company's FlexiHash technology, the ISL9206 power manager performs battery authentication via a challenge-response scheme using 32-bit challenge and an 8-bit authentication codes. The process does not require a fixed challenge, eliminating eavesdropping on the communication bus. Multi-pass authentication is available, providing the highest possible security level. The device specifies a wide operating voltage range and is suitable for use with a one-cell li-ion/li-poly or a three-cell series NiMH battery pack. Support for higher cell counts and voltage packs comes by way of connecting to the lowest cell in the stack. Other features include 16x8 OTP ROM for storing up to three sets of 32-bit host-selectable secrets with additional programmable memory for storage of up to 48 bits of ID code and/or pack information, non-unique mapping of the secret key to an 8-bit authentication code, an XSD single-wire host bus interface, true zero-power sleep mode, and an operating temperature from -20°C to +85°C. Available in five-lead SOT-23 or six-lead TDFN packages, price is $0.40 each/1,000. INTERSIL CORP., Milpitas, CA. (888) 352-6832.
