PWM Controller Supports Soft-Switching Asymmetrical Half-Bridge Topologies

Tailored to medium and high-power SMPS applications, the L6591 is allegedly the first integrated controller optimized for zero-voltage switching asymmetrical half-bridge converters. The device, integrating all functional blocks necessary to control a soft-switching half-bridge converter, employs zero-voltage switching to eliminate turn-on switching losses, minimize EMI emissions, and support operation at up to 500 kHz. Other features include a quiescent current lower than 3 mA, PFC interface, comprehensive protection including pulse-by-pulse over-current protection to prevent false tripping, overload protection with latched or auto restart behavior, transformer-saturation detection, and adaptive under-voltage lock out. With a voltage-handling capability up to 700V and available in a SO16N surface-mount package, price starts at $1.50 each/2,500 STMICROELECTRONICS, Lexington, MA. (888) 787-3550.
