Embarking as third-generation Fusion digital power controllers, the UCD9240 4-output, multi-phase power system controllers integrate digital pulse width modulators with a 250-ps resolution. Configurable via a graphical user interface, the devices also employ the Fusion digital power peripheral, which performs full-digital loop control while supporting switching frequencies of up to 2 MHz. They support up to 100 PMBus commands for control, configuration, and management of the power supply while consuming an operating current as low as 40 mA. Also on chip is a unique phase-management feature that enables the power supply to operate at high efficiency over the range of the load. This allows for turning phases on and off, enabling only the necessary phases. In addition, the device supports optimization of the loop response for a particular operating condition to meet an acceptable transient response over the load range. Samples are available in 64-pin QFN packages. Pricing for the UCD9240 is $5.95 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (972) 644-5580.
