A more-efficient ecological cookstove, video games and a drug dispersal device that helps prevent accidental overdoses are just a few of the 195 projects and inventions that were on display during Ohio State's 8th annual Engineering Design Showcase. Sponsored by ArcelorMittal, the event has more than tripled in size since it debuted in 2008.

Ohio State to pilot $6.8 million initiative to accelerate manufacturing innovation

The U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Defense have chosen The Ohio State University Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) to create a new model for manufacturing and commercialization support for regional businesses.

A three-year $6.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (DoD/OEA) will fund CDME’s work to foster economic stability and growth in central and north central Ohio by advancing the global competitiveness of existing defense and commercial manufacturing companies.

“EDA is pleased to partner with the DoD’s Office of Economic Adjustment and The Ohio State University to support small and mid-sized manufacturers in the central Ohio region,” said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams. “We applaud the CDME for their focus on coupling multi-industry collaboration, technology commercialization and workforce development into one unified program that will maximize the impact for businesses striving to get new technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace and ready the local workforce to compete for jobs in emerging technologies.” Read More

Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering

As technology expands, the demand for electrical and computer engineers continues to increase. Graduates in ECE face a bright and challenging future, with positions to be found in research, design and development, manufacturing, marketing, management, and other areas.

ECE graduates are heavily recruited by companies for positions throughout the world. These include computer, aerospace, automotive, telephone and electric utilities, electronics manufacturers, and other industries. Positions are also available in many government agencies.

An ECE degree is also a good background for pre-medicine and for careers in business or law. Electrical and computer engineers have become entrepreneurs, applying their training to new areas of service.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a diverse field and the broadest of any of the engineering disciplines. It provides a sound foundation for careers in technical management. Students in mechanical engineering can choose to study topics ranging from numerical methods to fluid dynamics, heat transfer to automatic control systems and many more. Graduates find jobs in an equally diverse market, working closely with industrial systems engineers in manufacturing, doing product design for automakers, designing and manufacturing biomedical devices, improving the efficiency of energy conversion devices, and performing cutting-edge research in industrial organizations or agencies such as NASA.
